I am super excited to be able to write another article for LawCareers.net.
The theme this time is around being proud of your unique and interesting self and not being afraid to showcase it in law firm applications, or to anyone else for that matter.
It came about partly from a call I had earlier this year with someone from a recruitment consultancy company helping people who had lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic to get back into work who made the comment that I should hide the fact that I have a learning difficulty.
Naturally, I didn't take too kindly to that comment for a couple of reasons:
1) because I'm "out" as autistic, so that genie ain't going back into the bottle any time soon, and
2) because I have spent a large portion of my time on this earth hiding who I really am and feeling ashamed of being different and not willing to embrace the fact that I'm different and unique and interesting, and don't want to do that anymore, hence why I'm so open about who I really am.
But I know that I'm not the only one who has experienced prejudice on their journey in the profession, so I had hoped to use my writing and the outreach and goodwill of the platform to encourage aspiring lawyers to be proud of who they truly and authentically are, and to encourage reps from law firms who might be reading to accept the next generation of lawyers for who they truly are.
So I hope that the incident that I experienced and that helped me see my worth for who I truly am can help others to feel proud of their unique and interesting self and encourage them to bring their authentic self to their firm applications and to their employers.
Also, I can't begin to describe how grateful I am that such a renowned platform continues to choose to feature young aspiring lawyers like me and promote their views, their work, their journeys, and their messages. It is so brilliant and important that the next generation feels a part of the profession they are working so hard to enter, and brilliant that the most renowned platform in the profession for aspiring lawyers sees that they are special and that they are worth the investment.
Again, thank you LawCareers.net and to everyone in the content and and engagement team for your kind words and for the time you have offered me to write for you. I hope that other readers can take something good away from it!
Please go and have a read of the article for yourself!
Be safe and be well! :)
